Clara, a 8 year-old girl, spends most of her time giving aerobic lessons to an imaginary audience. She has created a world which enables her to overcome, in her own way, the painful reality of her mother dying.
Synopsis
Standing in a field, counting aloud, Clara goes through various exercises. Her job : aerobic fitness teacher. Her audience: imaginary clients, which she creates sometimes in infinite detail, and with whom she has become friends.
But reality is quite different. Catherine, Clara’s mother, is dying. Something which 8 year-old Clara does not acknowledge. She believes, or prefers to believe, that her mother is just pretending to be sick. Clara is angry and prefers to live in denial of the truth. She continues to enjoy life, spending her days with her “clients”.
Today during the medical visit, Catherine’s nurse and friend Sophie tells her, that the end is near. Catherine must speak to her daughter and tell her the situation, a difficult moment for Catherine to face. Sophie, on her side, tries to bring some tenderness into Clara’s day.
“We are not here to be living dead » follows the course of that particular day, during which 8 year-old Clara tries to cope with the situation, through denyial, anger and finally, by finding her own way to keep her mother near.
In this no exit drama under the scorching summer sun, a child facing the inconceivable, seeks a way out, thanks to the magic of imagination…

Clara, une fillette de 8 ans et demi, passe la majeure partie de son temps à donner des cours d’aérobic à un public imaginaire. Le monde qu’elle s’est créé va l’aider à surmonter, à sa manière, la douloureuse réalité: celle de sa mère mourante.
Synopsis
Dans un grand pré, Clara répète des mouvements sur un air de musique techno, tout en comptant à haute voix. Son activité: professeure d’aérobic. Son public: des clientes imaginaires. Des clientes qu’elle invente parfois jusque dans le détail ou avec qui elle se lie d’amitié.
Dans son entourage « réel », il y a Catherine, sa mère malade et Sophie, l’infirmière et amie de celle-ci, qui vient régulièrement lui rendre visite. Entre Sophie et Clara existe un lien affectif fort.
Clara refuse de parler de la mort certaine de sa mère. Pour elle, Catherine fait semblant. La fillette est très en colère et n’accepte pas cet abandon tout proche. Elle continue alors de vivre dans la bonne humeur avec ses clientes. Quant à Catherine, elle reste persuadée qu’elle va s’en sortir et ne souhaite pas non plus aborder le sujet de son décès avec sa fille.
Mais ce jour-là, alors que Sophie rend visite à Catherine, toutes les deux réalisent que la fin est imminente. Sophie devient alors le lien central entre la mère et la fille et va aider Clara à accepter l’inacceptable, en entrant en douceur dans son monde imaginaire.
Et un, deux, trois, quatre suit le court de cette journée, où Clara tentera de faire face à la situation, par le déni, la colère, puis enfin par une merveilleuse ellipse, qui lui permettra de pouvoir vivre et garder sa mère près d’elle, à sa manière.
Dans ce huit clos sous le soleil brûlant de l’été, une enfant confrontée à l’inimaginable se sauvera par la magie de son imagination…
